HOPE FOR AT-RISK YOUTH AND THEIR PARENTS
Stephen F. Hamilton, in his article, “Raising Standards and Reducing Dropout Rate”, Part of a Teacher’s College Record Study on School Dropout Patterns and Policies, identifies 4 characteristics of successful at-risk school programs. They are:
-
Dropouts are separated from other students
-
The Programs have strong vocational components
-
Out of classroom learning is utilized
-
Programs tend to be intensive-small, individualized with low student teacher ratios-and tend to offer more counseling than regular school curriculum. We agree. In fact, Hope Learning with it’s “Whole Approach” to learning exists to intervene in the lives of at-risk youth and their parents:
We look at the teenagers “whole life”, and with his/her parents, design a strategy of change that includes parents. All of this takes place in an alternative learning environment that is very different than traditional learning environments. Last year our students entered our program with an average GPA of 0.75 and left with an average GPA of 3.65. This was accomplished utilizing a curriculum that many educators agree is more difficult than most of the curriculum utilized by our public school systems. While GPA statistics are impressive we exist to not just help a child excel in school, but in life. Our rich mentoring environment concentrates on building character and affecting thinking. We are rebuilding youth.

School Partnerships
Schools with students that do not qualify for their school, or students that are being expelled, are usually the students we are able to help. We have even been able to transition many of our students back to mainstream programs successfully.
Community Partnerships
We are attempting to partner with local businesses and organizations that can provide job pipelines and training for our students. Our non-transition students desperately need hope for the future and you can provide a vital part of their “light at the end of the tunnel”.
Financial Partnerships
As you can imagine, to be successful at what we do, we rely on the generous support of members of the community. Your donation is tax-deductible and will ensure that we keep our program accessible to low income families, that our technological tools are cutting edge, that we retain the best staff, and that we are ready to take any and all steps in the future to ensure that our intervention is second to none.
